Sensory impairment

If you have sight or hearing problems we will aim to help you, and those who help look after you (carers), to live as independently as possible in your own home.

Organisations that can help

Northamptonshire Association for the Blind

Northamptonshire Association for the Blind is the leading provider of specialist advice, support and information for anyone suffering with sight loss in Northamptonshire.

Specsavers offer a free home eye test to those who are not able to get to the opticians due to physical or mental disability.

Northampton DeafConnect

DeafConnect aims to empower all people with a hearing loss to achieve their full potential and become fully included members of the community.

Hearing dogs are trained dogs that alert deaf people of sounds they can’t hear. Sounds we take for granted like the doorbell, alarm clock and even danger signals like the fire alarm. Being aware of these important sounds makes a real difference in deaf people’s lives.

Short breaks services

Sometimes called respite care, these services offer short breaks and support staff are there to help you 24 hours a day. They help you to be as independent as possible and to provide quality care and support when it is required. Olympus Care Services provide a short breaks service.

Shared Lives

A Shared Lives placement can be somewhere to live, to stay for a short break, to go for day time support, or support to live in your own home. You will be supported by someone called a Shared Lives carer who will share their home with you and include you as part of their family.

The reablement service will help you to manage tasks on your own. See leaving hospital for information on reablement.
