Service description:
Tools for Self Reliance (Northampton) provides supervised work experience for disadvantaged adults and young people. We have sheltered workshop facilities in Northampton and an outreach group in Towcester, refurbishing tools for those in need in developing countries and for use by community groups within the county.

On average, 60 disadvantaged volunteers attend one or more of our workshop sessions per week. We are assisted by a further 10 voluntary helpers.

Working as a group with a common interest, all our volunteers enjoy the friendly and relaxed environment of the Tools workshop. We start work at 10am, stop for an hours lunch at 12.30 and then carry on until 4pm. Volunteers bring their own lunch in with them.

All our volunteers are supervised by either their carers or able-bodied individuals also working in the workshop. Work is given to them according to their ability and they are left to work at their own speed. Everybody works, chats and makes new friends. At the end of the day the tools they are making ‘as new’ are being sent around the world to help others. In the workshop is a map that allows everyone to see where their tools have been sent.
