Service description:
I hold qualified teacher status (Bachelor of Education, 1984) and have a Postgraduate Certificate in Asperger Syndrome (2005). Following my time in mainstream teaching, I have been offering autism advice and training to schools and parents; initially working for Northamptonshire County Council’s Autistic Spectrum team from 2008-2012, based in East Northamptonshire. This role included compiling reports and recommendations from classroom observations; attending annual statement reviews, interim reviews and multi-agency meetings; delivering training to schools and parents/carers; liaising closely with other professionals.

I’ve delivered post-diagnosis programmes (I also co-wrote training on sharing the diagnosis, for professionals and parents/carers). I have had 2 Day Social Stories, 3 & 5 Day TEACCH, 2 Day basic PECS, 2 Day SCERTs, 1 Day Protective Behaviours and National eCAF training. I have also been trained to use the ADOS assessment tool as the ‘second professional’ and am able to support other professionals in examining the evidence for a diagnosis.

Since September 2012 I’ve offered a range of independent services:
- Individual observations in school or in the home with clear recommendations
- Comprehensive reports, written as part of evidence gathering; whether pre-diagnosis, post-diagnosis, or when seeking statutory support
- Post diagnosis support for the individual, the family and school, personalised to suit the needs of the individuals concerned
- Advice with writing appropriate targets and support with review meetings
- Specific programmes such as anger and anxiety management, social skills development
- Social story writing and/or training in how to write your own social stories
- Autism training for teaching and support staff, families, support groups – on a variety of topics (please ask for details)
- Transition support between year groups/different educational settings
I continue to update my skills regularly, attending training and conferences that are relevant to autism and SEN.
