Service description:
At Catalyst Theatre Arts Ltd we come up with exciting projects for all kinds of people in all kinds of places: from parents and their babies/toddlers in Children’s Centres, primary and secondary schools to college pupils and their teachers and inclusive youth theatres. We also work with young carers and children and adults with learning and physical disabilities. The youngest that we have worked with is just 6 weeks old and the oldest is 102!

The Project
Tunes Together are monthly music making sessions for disabled children and their families in Northamptonshire. Families from all over the county come to us on a monthly basis to share an afternoon of fun music making activities.

We are delighted to have been awarded funding for a second year from Youth Music and are very excited about the new opportunities that this enables us to provide to both participants and music leaders of the future.

Working in partnership with Royal & Derngate Theatres, a local special school and another with Designated Special Provision, these monthly sessions for primary aged children and their families run during term time.

Project Aim
To provide opportunities for children with varying disabilities and their families to develop music making skills through participation in regular monthly music. Working with professional music leaders and through accessing live music, also to increase confidence, communication skills and foster a lifelong love for music making amongst participants.

What happens in a session?
To provide the flexibility required for the needs of the participants, we use a range of activities and methods: singing, visual prompts, movement, listening/responding, playing instruments, conducting/composing, some based on the instrument of the live musician and others using resources as props. There are also opportunities to learn about, listen and respond to live instruments.

The integration of Makaton signing and symbols makes sessions more effective for those children with language and communication difficulties, ensuring that they can play an active role.

We have:
Sung about elephants
Made firework music
Had a drum bath
Composed a winter story
Sung into microphones
Made and played giant instruments
Conducted musicians
Bounced apples
Been on a jungle adventure.....

“He said his name and banged the drum without needing encouragement. I was expecting him to need to be pushed to do it. I was surprised and very happy that he did it on his own.”

“The best gift we’ve received so far from Tunes Together is his smiles, laughter and giggles. They are rarely seen and are treasured by us all.”

and that's just some of the musical aspects!

Tunes Together is a really important social occasion for the families as well, giving them a much needed opportunity to be together as a family and have a nice time!

"There are few, if any activities that the whole family can do together with a child with PMLD. It brings our family closer as a unit in an enjoyable way."
