Service description:
Our team has a wide range of skills and experience in children’s speech and language therapy. We have two main bases, however as a community service we often see children at home, nursery, school, children’s centres and clinics across the county.

What we do
We assess the child or young person’s communication and liaise with parents before deciding how to support any difficulties and promote the development of more effective skills.

We also provide advice and support for children who are having difficulties with eating, drinking and swallowing and those who require alternative communication systems like aids or signing.
We work in partnership with parents and carers, teachers, learning support assistants and childcare workers to help children and young people develop their communication skills. We offer training sessions to help others understand the nature and impact of communication difficulties.
We give advice to help parents carry out specific practice activities at home. We also advise learning support assistants to help them deliver communication targets and programmes in school.
For help and advice regarding a referral to the children’s speech and language therapy service please discuss your child’s needs with your health visitor or their school or nursery. We accept referrals from healthcare professionals and education staff.

The Speech and Language Therapy Service are also offering training called "Talking Success" aimed at staff working in the local authority, academy and free mainstream primary schools and may be useful for some staff in maintained nursery schools.
