Service description:
Appropriate Adult service for young people at the police station or in court, ensuring they understand the processes they need to go through and supporting them on bail

Young men and women up to 17-years-old


Statutory Appropriate Adult provision as defined by the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE)

Providing emergency shelter for up to 7 nights while social services find appropriate accommodation

84% of overnight prisoners engaged with the service April 2012-March 2013 were released from custody, either or having been sentenced

19% of these young people successfully completed bail support programmes

Young people charged with an offence are supported throughout the relevant processes, whether in police custody or in court. Transport can be provided between the young person and their family or carer and to court and appointments. Bail conditions are monitored.

Other professionals and agencies are involved, where appropriate, in helping to compile a package of bail support focusing on:
- addressing anger or substance misuse issues
- re-engagement in education
- support with family relationships
- support for mental health
- help securing accommodation
- Volunteers also explore constructive leisure activities with the young person.

Young people are also involved in reviewing processes.

Referrals are received from the police and the courts.
