Hill Rise, Ridgeway School, Kempston, Bedford, MK42 7EB
Telephone number:

Service description:
Ridgeway School holds a unique position within Bedford Borough. It is the only all-age school, (ages between 3 and 19 years) providing education for pupils with physical disabilities and/ or medical conditions and associated learning and communication difficulties. Recently, the site has benefited from a new building for Post-16 provision, which is intended for young people up to the age of 25.

The school building is purpose-built, spacious and fully accessible to wheelchair users. The main building features well-equipped classrooms, an ICT suite, excellent bathroom facilities, high-tech optimusic equipment, and a hydro-therapy pool. The school has a number of temporary classroom areas used mainly for the delivery of specialist subjects such as Art, Music, Science and Technology. Recent additions to the facilities include a music recording system, accessible playground equipment on the Primary playground, and a number of iPads to supplement the large number of desk-top computers and laptops in school.

The school is situated on the same campus as Hastingsbury School and is joined to the Child Development Centre (CDC). Close links are made with both establishments; some older pupils undertake inclusion opportunities and study for Entry-level or GCSE certificates at Hastingsbury, and a number of children use CDC facilities such as the soft play and sensory rooms. Pupils from Hastingsbury often visit the school as part of their courses, e.g. ICT in Years 12 and 13 to learn about access for people with disabilities, or for work experience.
The Post-16 provision has close links with local colleges including Barnfield, Shuttleworth and Moulton. Students undertake appropriate work experience placements and prepare for their future beyond school. Many students take up local and residential college placements when they leave Ridgeway. It is intended that the extended provision for young people past the age of 19 will be on a part-time basis and will include modules teaching life-skills.
