The Northampton Academy: admissions information

Oversubscription criteria: September 2016 entry

If the number of applications for admissions is greater than 240 the following process occurs:

All applicants are placed within five bands of cognitive ability. These bands are of equal size and are based on the Cognitive Ability Test taken in almost all Northampton Primary Schools. When a pupil has not taken a test, an estimate is provided by the head teacher of their Primary School. If this is not possible (e.g. child has moved from abroad), students will be placed systematically in bands starting with the middle band: Band 3, then 2, then 4, then 1, then 5. Repeating this process, until all students without a band are placed. The number to be admitted from each band is determined by dividing the school’s admission number of 240 by five.

Following the allocation of places to pupils who have a statement of special educational needs which names the school as appropriate provision, when there are more applications for places than there are places available, priority will be given in the following order:
The oversubscription admission criteria will then be applied as follows:

  1. Looked After Children – Children in public care (looked after children) and previously looked after children
  2. Sibling link – children who will have an older sibling attending the Academy at the time of admission in years 7 to 13 or had a sibling in Year 13 on National Secondary Allocation Day. (See below for the full definition).
  3. Other Pupils.

Tiebreaker – Distance to the door

Where more than one child is equally entitled to a place under any of the oversubscription criteria, a tiebreaker will be applied of the shortest distance between the child’s permanent address and the
Academy. That distance is the shortest straight line distance, as the crow flies, between the front door entrance to the child’s permanent address and the front door entrance to the Academy main building.
The distance is measured in kilometres to four decimal places, using data MAP SMART Education GISD software or equivalent. In the event of two or more distances being the same, random allocation will be used to decide the priority given to each application.

The child’s permanent address is where he or she normally lives and sleeps and goes to school from on the majority of school nights (Sunday – Thursday). Proof of residence can be requested at any
time throughout the admissions process. If false or misleading information is used to gain entry to the Academy, the offer of a place will be withdrawn and the application cancelled.

Definition of sibling

A sibling includes step siblings, foster siblings, adopted siblings and other children living permanently at the same address. A sibling link does not apply to cousins or other more distant relations nor to any sibling living at a different address. A twin or children from a ‘multiple birth’ will be given a sibling link as soon as the first child is allocated a place. This is to avoid the situation where only one sibling is successful in obtaining a place.

If this is not possible (e.g. child has moved from abroad), pupils will be placed randomly in bands starting with the middle band.

Following the allocation of places to pupils who have a statement of special educational needs which names the school as appropriate provision, when there are more applications for places than there are places available, priority will be given in the following order: The oversubscription admission criteria will then be applied as follows:

If this school receives more applications than there are places available, the policy of fair banding is applied.
