How to use the e-books service

Follow the four steps below to use our e-Books download service:

The features of the e-book service are:

  • e-books are free to download.
  • You can download a maximum of 5 e-books at a time for up to 3 weeks.
  • No overdues as loans expire after 3 weeks.
  • Fiction and non-fiction titles are available in EPUB and PDF formats.
  • You can download our e-books onto PCs, Macs and all e-book readers except Kindle (Amazon do not currently allow Kindle titles to be lent by public libraries in Europe).
  • You can download direct onto iPad, iPhone and Android phones.
  • You will not be able to download onto or via a library computer.

Go to the log in page and enter your library card number (without any D preceding the number) and also your PIN. If you do not know or have forgotten your PIN number please contact your nearest library.

Adobe ID

An Adobe ID is required to authenticate your eReader for use with our service. When a title is downloaded, it is locked to your Adobe ID. All your devices must be assigned the same Adobe ID for them to be able to read your loan titles. If you do not have an Adobe ID, please create one via the Adobe web site.

e-Book reader

Depending on the e-book reader the system will either take you to the Adobe Digital Editions download manager and then onto your Adobe Digital Editions virtual bookshelf or to the eBook Reader software where the Reader's own software will manage the download, virtual bookshelf and syncing with the Reader.

PC/Mac

For PC/Mac users, eBooks are downloaded using the standard eBook software Adobe Digital Editions. The first time you try to download an eBook you will be prompted to download and install Adobe Digital Editions if this software is not already on your PC/Mac.

Apple iPhone/iPad

In order to successfully download to your Apple device you must have the Bluefire Reader app installed. Once installed and configured with your Adobe ID you can start to download your titles by browsing this site from your Apple device.

Android device

In order to successfully download to your Android device you must have the Aldiko or Bluefire app installed. Once installed and configured with your Adobe ID you can start to download your titles by browsing this site from your device.

Library staff cannot advise on technical matters relating to downloading e-books to devices. Please refer to our frequently asked questions page for information on the e-book service and system requirements.
